Saliva urea nitrogen dipsticks to predict acute kidney injury in Malawian trauma patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: Many low-resource settings have limited access to serum creatinine tests necessary for kidney disease identification. Among Malawian patients who are hospitalized after trauma, we evaluated the use of point-of-care saliva urea nitrogen (SUN) dipsticks predict acute injury (AKI). Methods: In a nested prospective cohort study, enrolled trauma aged ≥6 months evaluate AKI (defined by KDIGO criteria) and test characteristics SUN AKI.

Different Biomarkers of Acute kidney Injury in Cancer Patients
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) occurs if the kidneys suddenly lose their ability to remove waste products. When the kidneys lose their ability to filter, dangerous levels of waste products can accumulate, which can upset the chemical composition of the blood and urine. Chemotherapy is one of the methods used to treat or temporarily reduce cancer by using certain medications. The main task of this tr...
متن کاملDiagnostic Performance of a Saliva Urea Nitrogen Dipstick to Detect Kidney Disease in Malawi
Introduction Kidney disease (KD), including acute kidney injury, is common, severe and leads to significant mortality in the developing world. However, simple tools to facilitate diagnosis and guide treatment are lacking. We studied the diagnostic performance of saliva urea nitrogen (SUN) measured by dipstick to diagnose KD in a low-resource setting. Methods Medical admissions to a tertiary h...
متن کاملThe meaning of the blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio in acute kidney injury
Background A blood urea nitrogen (BUN)/creatinine ratio (BCR) >20 (0.081 in international unit) is used to distinguish pre-renal azotemia (PRA) and acute tubular necrosis (ATN). However, there is little evidence that BCR can distinguish between these two conditions and/or is clinically useful. Methods We conducted a retrospective study using a large hospital database. Patients were divided in...
متن کاملHsp72 Is a Novel Biomarker to Predict Acute Kidney Injury in Critically Ill Patients
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Acute kidney injury (AKI) complicates the course of disease in critically ill patients. Efforts to change its clinical course have failed because of the fail in the early detection. This study was designed to assess whether heat shock protein (Hsp72) is an early and sensitive biomarker of acute kidney injury (AKI) compared with kidney injury molecule (Kim-1), neutrophi...
متن کاملA Salivary Urea Nitrogen Dipstick to Detect Obstetric-Related Acute Kidney Disease in Malawi
Introduction Obstetric-related acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with adverse outcomes for mother and fetus, particularly in low-income countries. However, laboratory-independent tools to facilitate diagnosis are lacking. We assessed the diagnostic performance of a salivary urea nitrogen (SUN) dipstick to detect obstetric-related acute kidney disease in Malawi. Methods Women at high ris...
